英语作文 篇1

That was a morning in the early of June. I took a bus to my school in the suburb which was surrounded by rice paddies and ponds. The sky was gray with the gloomy clouds congregating gradually along the far eastern horizon. "There must be a heavy rain soon." I spoke to myself.

When I hurried into the classroom, the sky, gray before, was shrouded now by black clouds, darken to twilight, I felt quite stuffy, while it was quite calm, without wind. I saw the leaves of trees and grass static, which seem to await something tohappen. Several minutes later, I saw the lightening split the clouds and heard the thunders following. Suddenly, the curtain of rain fell and the wind blew. soon the grass flattened under the wind and the rain. With the rain forming like a fog, the sky became bright. I took several deep breathes. I felt comfortable.

The heavy rain lasted three hours and stopped when the class was over. The air was so fresh and the sky was so clear. I felt like a new man myself.

Last holiday, I went to the rural grandmother's home with my sisters for a holiday. The sky in the country is more lovely than the city, the air is so fresh, the sky is so bright, and the people are happy. We followed my brothers on the hillsides to find wild mushrooms and to catch wild chicken... We have left footprints all over the mountains and plains, although scanty harvest, but very happy.

One morning, my aunt said to us, "let's go and dig the sweet potatoes today." As soon as I heard it, I jumped three feet high and shouted, "great, so good!" We're starting out. At this time, the sun just came out, and put a golden color on the crops in the distance. It was golden and sparkling. It's beautiful. It's a composition of two grade, "memorable vacation". I am intoxicated in this beautiful scenery. The elder sister walked by and said, "go quickly, or you will fall off." I had to follow them. It took about half an hour to go to the sweet potato. There is nothing else in the sweet potato field except for some sparse and sparse withered rattan. My aunt began to dig the sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes she dug were bigger than one. I really loved it in my hands. In a moment, the aunt dug out a lot of sweet potatoes. I asked my aunt in puzzles, "how did you dig so many sweet potatoes?" Auntie pointed to a withered sweet potato rattan, and said, "there are sweet potatoes, you dig and dig!" I dug the root of sweet potato vine, he was lying in a big sweet potato, I was very happy, hurriedly holding the results of their labor dance together, making everyone laugh. After a while, aunt under cut Zhucao, we dig on sweet potato. Dig dug, I slipped and rolled down from above, just rolled into the basket aunt, aunt hurried from the basket to pull me out. The sisters saw, laughing, said: "you really are a snake, was so slippery." I angrily said: "you have the humanity is good, I fell down, you not only don't comfort me, but schadenfreude." The elder sister said, "it's not that we don't have mercy, but the action you fall down is so funny." In the afternoon, we returned home with our own sweet potatoes, which we had dug with our own hands.

A holiday soon ended, and we left it unwillingly. Though it has been in the past few months, it reminds us every time.

英语作文 篇4

The issue that the automobile production is a double-edged sword is rather complex, since it involves a conflict between industrial expansion and the strategy of sustainable development. However, the final judgment should depend on a case-by-case analysis of several key factors.

Since the 1960s, the world has witnessed some dramatic changes in the automobile technology. As a result, a growing number of transport vehicles have been manufactured, thus providing citizens with growing convenience and efficiency. Additionally, some economists believe that automobile production contributes to the national economy by paying more tax and providing more job vacancies. For example, In the United States or Japan, automobile industry remains the backbone of their marketing economy, the primary source of national wealth and the major provider of jobs. However, in some other instances, the above-mentioned situation is not always adequate. For instance, suppose a car that is poorly designed and gives off such poisonous gas as monoxide, methane or acetylene. Surely enough, the more cars a company manufactured, the more likely automobile production should be responsible for the environmental degradation of urban regions and the worsening health of the citizens. Another exception to this approach is the case of traffic congestion. Admittedly, when vehicles of various kinds rush to the same avenue, traffic jams invariably occur, which always gives rise to delays or accidents. These are exceptional cases, yet the do exist.

Given the analysis above, it is justified to conclude that a proper use of automobiles has to be emphasized. For one thing, governmental departments are obliged to take concrete measures to boost automobile production while keeping track of the emission of pollutants. For another thing, citizens should be aware of the corresponding side effects while enjoying the leisure of their car ride. Only in this way can they benefit greatly from the rapid growth of automobile manufacture. (305 words)

英语作文 篇7

A Century Later, Statue of Liberty Still Attracts Millions

From VOA Learning English, welcome to This is America. I'm Steve Ember.

Today we tell about the Statue of Liberty. The huge, green statue celebrates American freedom. It has served as the guardian of New York Harbor for more than a century.

Come along with us, as we visit "Lady Liberty."

The Statue of Liberty may be one of the most often photographed works of art in the world. A French sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, designed the statue in the late 1800s. Today the monument continues to present a beautiful sight on the New York skyline. But it came close to never arriving in the United States.

The materials required for building the Statue of Liberty were almost lost at sea. In 1885, the ship carrying those materials almost sank in stormy seas. Bartholdi's dream of a huge sculpture might never have been fulfilled.

Luckily, the ship survived the rough seas. It arrived safely in June of 1885. By the next year, the Statue of Liberty had arisen on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue was officially opened that year. Many years later, the island was given a new name: Liberty Island.

  She's a Survivor

The Statue of Liberty has survived damage caused by time, visits by millions of people and the weather. It stood firm during a destructive storm, Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast in October of 20xx. But Liberty Island suffered damage, requiring major repairs.

"Lady Liberty", as many people call the statue, was a gift from the people of France. Its full name is "Liberty Enlightening the World."

The United States and France have been friends and allies since the American Revolution. France helped the American colonial armies defeat British forces. The war officially ended in 1783. A few years later, the French rebelled against their king.

A French historian and political leader, Edouard-Rene Lefebvre de Laboulaye, had the idea for the statue. In 1865, he suggested that the French and the Americans build a monument together to celebrate freedom. Bartholdi agreed to design it.

In 1875, the French established an organization to raise money for Bartholdi's creation. Two years later, an American group was formed to raise money to pay for a pedestal. American architect Richard Morris Hunt was chosen to design this support structure. The pedestal would stand 47 meters high.

In France, Bartholdi designed a model of the Statue of Liberty. Then he built a series of larger copies of the very small model statue. Workers created a wooden form covered with plaster for each part. They placed 300 pieces of copper on the forms. The copper skin was about two and one half millimeters thick, the same as two American pennies placed back-to-back.

The statue also needed a structure that could hold its weight -- more than 200 tons. French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel created the new technology. Later, he designed the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Eiffel and others worked in Paris to produce a strong support system for the statue. The design also had to have the ability to move a little in strong winds. Lady Liberty has continued to stand during many a storm, including Hurricane Sandy.

France had wanted to give the statue to the United States on the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence -- July fourth, 1876. But technical problems and lack of money delayed the project. France finally officially presented the statue to the United States in Paris in 1884. But the pedestal being built in New York was not finished. Not enough money had been donated to complete the project.

The publisher of the "New York World" newspaper came to the rescue. Joseph Pulitzer used his newspaper to persuade Americans to give more money to finish the pedestal. His efforts brought in another $100,000. And the pedestal was finished.

In France, workers separated the statue into 350 pieces, put them on a ship and sent them across the ocean. After surviving the rough seas, the statue arrived in New York in more than 200 wooden boxes. It took workers four months to build the statue on the pedestal.

On October 28th, 1886, President Grover Cleveland accepted the statue in a ceremony. He said: "We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected."

Throughout history, the idea of liberty has often been represented by images of a woman. Historians say the statue's face was created to look like Bartholdi's mother. Her right arm holds a torch high in the air. Her left arm holds a tablet with the date of America's Declaration of Independence -- July fourth, 1776.

On her head, the Statue of Liberty wears a crown with seven points. Each point is meant to represent the light of freedom as it shines on the seven seas and seven continents of the world. The 25 windows in the crown represent gemstones found on Earth. A chain that represents oppression lies broken at her feet.

  Lady Liberty's message of hope

In 1903, a bronze plaque was placed on the inner wall of the statue's pedestal. On it are words from the poem "The New Colossus," written by Emma Lazarus in 1883. The marker represents the statue's message of hope for people seeking freedom. One memorable line reads "I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

  With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Lady Liberty was officially named a National Monument in 1924. The Statue of Liberty monument now includes nearby Ellis Island, the former federal immigration processing center. Millions of immigrants, after their ships passed the Statue of Liberty, were examined on Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924.

"This view is similar to the one seen by immigrants as they entered the US by steamship. When the ships neared New York, the shining torch of the Statue of Liberty rose from the bay. Shouts and cries of joy would erupt from the steamer decks. For many, Liberty Enlightening the World, as the Statue is officially titled, symbolized the freedom and opportunity that awaited them in their new land."

More than 40 percent of Americans have at least one ancestor who passed through the processing center.Through the years, many of these people have continued to visit the Statue of Liberty. Some people say a trip to New York City does not seem complete without it.

By the 1980's, however, the statue was old and becoming dangerous for visitors. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan asked businessman Lee Iacocca to lead a campaign to repair it.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation raised about 100 million dollars in private donations to do the work. The repairs included replacing the torch and covering it with 24 carat gold.On July fourth, 1986, New York City and the nation celebrated a restored and re-opened Statue of Liberty.

New York was one of the targets of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 20xx.The statue remained closed for security reasons until August 20xx.At that time, officials limited visits to the pedestal and lower observation area. But that fact did not seem to keep too many people away. The statue continued to attract visitors -- more than three million a year.

Finally, in 20xx, the statue above the pedestal re-opened.Limited groups of energetic people climbed the many steps leading to Lady Liberty's crown.

On October 29th, 20xx, the Statue again closed the inside of the pedestal for restoration purposes. It opened on October 28th a year later -- for exactly one day.The next day, Hurricane Sandy struck.

About 75 percent of the island was under water during the storm.Flood waters entered the administration building and a structure filled with electrical equipment. The waters came close to the bottom of the statue, yet did not touch it.Trees fell and waste cans flew from one side of the island to the other.Bricks broke away from walkways. But hundreds of Park Service employees worked hard to help re-build the island.

Today, people can again explore Lady Liberty. But as usual, she is extremely popular.Sometimes crowds wait for hours to get on a boat to visit America's big copper statue honoring freedom.

This program was written by Jerilyn Watson. I'm Steve Ember, inviting you to join us again next week for another This is America program from VOA Learning English.

英语作文 篇8

i remember seeing harry that first evening. he wasnt much more than a thin, anious kid then. he was all dressed up and i knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

well, the passengers came up and i had to get busy. i didnt look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9:18 and i was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.she didnt come on the 9:18 either, nor on the 9:40, and when the passengers from the 10:02 had all arrived and left, harry was looking pretty desperate. pretty soon he came close to my window so i called out and asked him what she looked like.

"shes small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. she has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. i mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. shes got a brown fur, but maybe she isnt wearing it."i couldnt remember seeing anybody like that.

he showed me the telegram hed received: arrive thursday. meet me station. love love love love. may. it was from omaha, nebraska."well," i finally said, "why dont you phone to your home? shes probably called there if she got in ahead of you."

he gave me a sick look. "ive only been in town two days. we were going to meet and then drive down south where ive got a job. she hasnt any address for me." he touched the telegram.

when i came on duty the net day he was still there and came over as soon as he saw me.

"did she work anywhere?" i asked.

he nodded. "she was a typist. i telegraphed her former boss. all they know is that she left her job to get married."

harry met every train for the net three or four days. of course, the railroad lines made a routine checkup and the police looked into the case. but nobody was any real help. i could see that they all figured that may had simply played a trick on him. but i never believed that, somehow.

one day, after about two weeks, harry and i were talking and i told him about my theory. "if youll just wait long enough," i said, "youll see her coming up those stairs some day." he turned and looked at the stairs as though he had never seen them before.

the net day when i came to work harry was behind the counter of tonys magazine stand. he looked at me rather sheepishly and said, "well, i had to get a job somewhere, didnt i?"

so he began to work as a clerk for tony. we never spoke of may anymore and neither of us ever mentioned my theory. but i noticed that harry always saw every person who came up the stairs.

toward the end of the year tony was killed in some argument over gambling, and tonys widow left harry in complete charge of the magazine stand. and when she got married again some time later, harry bought the stand from her. he borrowed money and installed a soda fountain and pretty soon he had a very nice little business.

then came yesterday. i heard a cry and a lot of things falling. the cry was from harry and the things falling were a lot of dolls and other things which he had upset while he was jumping over the counter. he ran across and grabbed a girl not ten feet from my window. she was small and dark and her eyebrows came to a little point in the middle.

for a while they just hung there to each other laughing and crying and saying things without meaning. shed say a few words like, "it was the bus station i meant" and hed kiss her speechless and tell her the many things he had done to find her. what apparently had happened three years before was that may had come by bus, not by train, and in her telegram she meant "bus station," not "railroad station." she had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find harry. finally she got a job typing.

"what?" said harry. "have you been working in town? all the time?"

  she nodded.

"well, heavens. didnt you ever come down here to the station?" he pointed across to his magazine stand. "ive been there all the time. i own it. ive watched everybody that came up the stairs."

she began to look a little pale. pretty soon she looked over at the stairs and said in a weak voice, "i never came up the stairs before. you see, i went out of town yesterday on a short business trip. oh, harry!" then she threw her arms around his neck and really began to cry.

after a minute she backed away and pointed very stiffly toward the north end of the station. "harry, for three years, for three solid years, ive been right over there working right in this very station, typing, in the office of the stationmaster."
