yue fei was no ordinary man. from his youth he had extraordinary strength. before even reaching puberty he could lift a 150 kgr weight and stretch a huge bow. he was taught the art of combat and that of the bow from master zhoutong and at the age of thirty he was already a leader of an unbeatable army. he participated in hundreds of battles and in commanding and training of his troops he was considered to be tough but fair. he was very successful with combat tactics and was usually able to defeat enemies that outnumbered him. because of his abilities it was said that "it is easier to move a mountain than yue fei's army".
the great general yue fei created the "108 hands", the so-called yue shi san shou, which later was known as ying zhao (eagle claw).
英语作文 篇3
the latest word on this continuing concern comes from the international agency for research on cancer (iarc), which has concluded that working regularly with hair dyes in hair salons and barbershops probably increases the risk of cancer and that long term employment in these establishments is "probably carcinogenic to humans."
however, the iarc, a world health organization panel, reported that there is not enough evidence to conclude that occasional personal use of hair coloring raises the risk of cancer.this new report, published in the april, , issue of lancet oncology, is the first scientific word on the subject since , when spanish researchers reported that their review of 79 studies from 11 countries yielded no strong evidence of a link between hair dye and cancer risk. the only connection the spanish team observed was the possibility of a slight increase in the risks of leukemia and multiple myeloma, but they concluded that the causal effect was too weak to be a major concern.earlier, researchers at yale university found that long-term use of dark hair dye by women who began coloring their hair before 1980 may increase the risk of non-hodgkins lymphoma. no such risk was seen among women who began dyeing their hair after 1980. here, the difference may be due to the elimination of coal-tar-derived ingredients used in the older products that are known carcinogens. the yale study was published in the jan. 15, , issue of the american journal of epidemiology.
in general, i discourage use of hair dyes containing artificial coloring agents, which to my mind are as suspect in cosmetic products as they are in food. hair dyes applied to the head are absorbed through the scalp, where theres a very rich blood supply that may carry them throughout the body. im sure that the new iarc report wont be the last word on this subject. ill keep you posted on developments.
英语作文 篇4
Spotlight on Copenhagen
Are you too old for fairy tales? If you think so, Copenhagen is sure to change your mind①.
See the city first from the water. In the harbor sits Denmark’s best-known landmark: the Little Mermaid. Remember her? She left the world of the sea in search of a human soul in one of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fantasies. From the harbor you can get a feel for the attractive “city of green spires.” At twilight or in cloudy weather, the copper-covered spires of old castles and churches lend the city a dream-like atmosphere. You’ll think you’ve stepped into a watercolor painting.
Copenhagen is a city on a human scale. You don’t have to hurry to walk the city’ s center in less than an hour. Exploring it will take much longer. But that’s easy. Copenhagen was the first city to declare a street for pedestrians only. The city has less traffic noise and pollution than any other European capital.
Stroll away from the harbor along the riverbanks, you’ll see the modest Amalienburg Palace first. Completed in the mid-18th century, it still houses the royal family. The Danish Royal Guard is on duty. At noon, you’ll watch the changing of the guard. The guards are not just for show, however. Danes will always remember their heroism on April 9, 1940. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, the guards aimed their guns and fired. Soldiers fell on both sides. The guards would all have been killed if the king hadn’t ordered them to surrender.
Churches and castles are almost all that remain of the original city. Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in 1445. During the late 16th century, trade grew, and so did the city. But fires in 1728 and 1795 destroyed the old wooden structures. Much of what we see today dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries②.
See one of the spires up close — really close — at the 17th century Church of Our Savior. Brave souls may climb the 150 stairs winding outside the spire to its top. If you’re afraid of heights, or if it’s a windy day, you can forget the climb. But then you’ll miss the magnificent view.
